President Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that Ukraine would finalize security agreements with the US and Japan during the ongoing 50th G7 summit in Italy.
“At the NATO Summit in Vilnius a year ago, the G7 pledged its support for Ukraine. Today, as part of this commitment, we are signing the final two security agreements with G7 members,” stated Zelenskyy on X.
Apart from collaborating on jet fighter production, expediting pilot training, and accelerating aircraft delivery, Kyiv’s primary concerns at the summit include enhancing Ukraine’s air defense with Western systems and expanding its long-range capabilities, as outlined by Zelenskyy during talks in Italy.
The 50th edition of the G7 summit commenced on Thursday in Borgo Egnazia, located on Italy’s southeastern heel. The summit is scheduled to conclude on Saturday.
Zelenskyy also emphasized Ukraine’s aim to secure approval for utilizing frozen Russian assets in the West to support Kyiv, particularly in developing its defense industry and jointly producing weapons.
“Bilateral security agreements will be signed during meetings with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The agreement with the United States will be unprecedented, reflecting the strong support of Ukraine by its allies,” Zelenskyy stated.
He added, “The entire Ukrainian nation, including our armed forces, recognizes that the G7 will consistently stand behind Ukraine.”
