Former President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance on ending “needless arrests and incarcerations of adults” for using small amounts of marijuana for personal use. In a recent Truth Social post, Trump stressed that it is time to implement smart regulations while providing access for adults to safe, tested marijuana products.
Trump expressed his support for Amendment 3 in Florida, which would legalize the personal use of marijuana for adults aged 21 and older. He plans to vote in favor of the measure this November, stating that “as a Floridian, I will be voting YES on Amendment 3 this November.”
The former president emphasized that someone should not be considered a criminal in Florida for using marijuana when it is legal in many other states. He believes that arresting adults with personal amounts of marijuana is a waste of taxpayer dollars and ruins lives.
As president, Trump plans to focus on research to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule 3 drug and work with Congress to pass common-sense laws. This includes supporting safe banking for state-authorized cannabis companies and upholding states’ rights to pass marijuana laws that work well for their citizens.
Trump’s stance puts him at odds with other Republican figures, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has expressed concerns about the negative impact of legalizing recreational cannabis on the quality of life. However, Trump argues that the measure should be implemented correctly, as voters are likely to approve it regardless of personal opinions.
The Pew Research Center reports that cannabis for personal and medical use is currently legal in 24 U.S. states, while 14 more states have legalized medical marijuana. Trump’s former Attorney General, William Barr, has accused the Biden-Harris administration of politicizing the legalization of cannabis and ignoring scientific evidence.
