Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, along with other members of the Joint Arab Islamic Ministerial Committee on Gaza, met with the Gazan Foreign Minister in Madrid on Wednesday.
Sanchez, who officially acknowledged the existence of a Palestinian state on Tuesday, posted the following on his X:
“It was an honor to host the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee on Gaza a day after Spain’s recognition of Palestine as a state. We are aligned with Arab countries in our commitment to ending violence and achieving a two-state solution. We believe this recognition will reignite hope among the Palestinian people for future peace, security, and prosperity in the region.”
Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, announced on Friday that the Spanish Embassy will be barred from providing services to West Bank Palestinians.
The decision came in response to Spain’s moves towards recognizing a Palestinian state and remarks by Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister deemed antisemitic by Katz.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles has asserted that the conflict in Gaza constitutes “an undeniable genocide” that cannot be ignored by the global community.
In an interview with TVE state television, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles echoed a comment by Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz, who earlier this week also described the Israel-Hamas war as a genocide.
