South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana urged the nation to prioritize stability over “chaos” by voting for the African National Congress. He also expressed his readiness to continue in his current position after the election.
“If I am called upon to continue, I am ready to do so,” he stated in an interview on Bloomberg Television with Jennifer Zabasajja on Tuesday. “These elections revolve around the choice between stability and chaos, and the ANC offers stability.”
South Africans are set to vote on Wednesday, marking the ruling ANC’s most challenging election since assuming power in 1994.
Opinion polls indicate a decline in ANC support, potentially below the 50% mark, which could necessitate forming a coalition with a smaller political party.
However, recent strength in the rand suggests investor confidence in the ANC’s ability to secure a government majority without aligning with left-leaning parties, thereby avoiding a shift towards a more populist and less market-friendly direction.
Citizens’ support for the ANC has declined due to allegations of corruption and mismanagement during its tenure.
However, since President Cyril Ramaphosa assumed office in 2018, the party has adopted a cautious approach toward fostering economic growth and development.
