In a strong statement delivered at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan emphasized the critical need to preserve Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty in accordance with international law. He expressed grave concerns over Israel’s ongoing military actions in Lebanon, warning that these could lead to “dangerous consequences” for the region.
“The absence of accountability and punishment despite Israel’s ongoing violations of international law and humanitarian law encourages further escalation,” bin Farhan stated. He called for an immediate cease-fire to halt the violence that has claimed numerous lives since the onset of Israeli airstrikes on September 23. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least 816 people have been killed and over 2,500 injured due to the bombardments.
The Saudi minister’s remarks come amid heightened tensions following a series of cross-border exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah, which have intensified since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza. The conflict has raised fears of a broader regional war, particularly as Hezbollah has engaged in retaliatory strikes against Israeli positions.
Bin Farhan highlighted that the ongoing violence threatens not only Lebanon but also the broader stability of the Middle East. He reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to joining international efforts aimed at establishing a cease-fire and facilitating a sustainable diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
The international community has echoed these sentiments, with calls for a temporary cease-fire from countries including the United States and members of the European Union. They aim to create space for diplomatic negotiations amid escalating violence. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take action against Israeli aggression, describing it as a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.
