The Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez said the country will officially recognize Palestine as a state during today’s cabinet meeting.
The Spanish Prime Minister stressed that “Today, the Minister of the government of Spain will approve the official recognition of the State of Palestine.”
Sanchez describes the decision as historic which is targeted to contribute to peaceful coexistence between both Palestine and Israel in the region.
“The recognition of the State of Palestine is not only a matter of historical justice with the legitimate aspirations of the people of Palestine, it is also a peremptory necessity if we all want to achieve peace.
It is the only way to achieve peace and move towards the solution that we all recognize as the only possible one to achieve a future of peace; that of a Palestinian state that coexists alongside the State of Israel in peace and security”, he said.
Spain, Ireland, and Norway would officially recognize the State of Palestine joining the list of over 145 countries that have assented to the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
The move by Spain has been described as aggressive by Israel as they withdraw their ambassador and block Spain’s humanitarian aid trucks’ access to Palestine.
