Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson announced on Tuesday that they have received an Israeli proposal for hostage negotiations and a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Ministry noted that the proposal reflects the positions outlined by US President Joe Biden. The spokesperson added that the proposal has been forwarded to Hamas, highlighting its alignment with the positions of both sides.
Qatar and Hamas have had a complex relationship characterized by diplomatic engagement, mediation efforts, and humanitarian aid initiatives. Qatar has served as a mediator between Hamas and other regional actors, seeking to facilitate dialogue and negotiations to address conflicts in the Middle East, particularly regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Furthermore, Qatar has provided financial and humanitarian assistance to Gaza, which is governed by Hamas, to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the territory.
However, Qatar’s relationship with Hamas has been viewed with scrutiny by some countries, particularly Israel and the United States, who consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
Despite these challenges, Qatar has continued to engage with Hamas, aiming to play a constructive role in resolving conflicts and promoting stability in the region.
Qatar has increasingly become a target for U.S. politicians as negotiations with Hamas have dragged on. American officials are growing more impatient with Hamas, prompting figures like Republican Sen. Tom Cotton (Ark.) and Democratic Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (Md.) to call for Qatar to apply pressure on Hamas to reach a deal or risk a reevaluation of the U.S.-Qatar relationship
