The arch-conservative Brothers of Italy group, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, emerged victorious in the recent European parliamentary election, showcasing a significant boost to her influence domestically and internationally.
Brothers of Italy secured 28.8% of the vote, with 96% of the ballots counted, marking a significant increase compared to its performance in the 2019 EU election and surpassing its 26% achievement in the 2022 national ballot when it ascended to power.
The center-left Democratic Party, in opposition, secured second place with 24% of the vote, while the 5-Star Movement, another opposition group, came in third with 9.9%—marking its poorest performance at a national level since its inception in 2009.
Prime Minister Meloni’s ruling coalition, consisting of parties spanning from the center-right to the far right of the political spectrum, saw its support edge up to more than 47% from just under 43% in 2022, as indicated by the EU ballot.
“I am proud that the majority governing this nation has been able to grow together. This is an extremely important thing for me and us. The message from Italians is: ‘Go ahead’.. and if possible with greater determination,” Meloni said.
