U.S House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is set to go ahead with her visit to Taiwan despite the warning of huge consequences from the Chinese government, say report.
Pelosi who is on her Asian tour visited Singapore on Monday, a tour with a possible stop at Taiwan has sparked global attention, as the world seeks to know the intent of Pelosi and whether she’s going as planned with her Taiwan visit despite the threat from China.
Pelosi on Monday held talks with an official from Singapore at the start of her Asian tour, where she seeks to continue growing bilateral relations between the United States and the Asian countries.
A report from local media in Taiwan stated that Pelosi will arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday night, a visit which will make her the highest-ranking elected official of the United States to visit the country in over 25 years now.
The proposed visit to Taiwan by Pelosi had sparked fury in China which regarded the Island of Taiwan as part of her territories, and any attempt by anybody or country to disintegrate the “One Chinese Policy” would be met with decisive measures that will lead to serious consequences.
Zhao Lijian who is the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in Beijing, “We would like to once again admonish the U.S that we are fully prepared for any eventuality and the PLA will never sit idly by.”
While reports from last week’s phone conversation between President Xi of China and President Biden of the United States had shown that the former had warned the latter “Not to play with Fire” by Taiwan.
Military presence on the strait of Taiwan by both the Chinese and the United States, as a direct confrontational attack sees irresistible, a move that could affect global politics amidst the political crisis between Russia and Ukraine.
An attempt by Pelosi to visit Taiwan is seen as an encouragement to recognize the independence of Taiwan which Beijing sees as part of her own.
Report from White House national security spokesman, John Kirby said “the U.S shouldn’t be intimidated by China’s threats to retaliate if Pelosi visits Taiwan. We want to make sure that when she travels overseas, she can do so safely and securely.” Kirby told CNN.
