The Kano State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker RT. Hon. Jibrin Falgore, announced the dethronement of the five emirs and the abolishment of the five Emirates during a special session.
The Assembly passed the Kano Emirates Council law (repeal bill) 2024, nullifying the previous law, and all offices established under it have been dissolved. Additionally, district heads elevated or appointed under the repealed law are instructed to return to their former positions.
The Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024, was introduced by Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader and representative of the Dala Constituency.
Originally, the law, which established five new emirates, was approved by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on December 5, 2019.
Subsequent amendments were signed by the governor on October 14, 2020, and April 11, 2023. Section 3(1) of the law delineated the boundaries of the five emirates: Kano and Karaye with eight local government areas each, Bichi and Gaya with nine, and Rano with jurisdiction over ten local government areas, out of the 44 in the state.
The law governing the Kano Emirate was amended after the deposition of the previous emir, Muhammadu Sanusi, on March 9, 2020.
The amended law states that the chairman of the council shall be the emir of the Kano Emirate. It also gives the governor the power to grade the office of an emir as first, second, or third class, subject to the approval of the state’s House of Assembly.
