Italy Prime Minister Mario Draghi tendered his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday.
Draghi informed the president of his resignation after a breakdown in his government which led to three parties refusing to support him in a confidence vote on Wednesday night.
Draghi resigned after spending a year and a half since his appointment as the unelected head of a unity government, a fall that might lead to the death of Italian left-wing populism leaving the right-wing populist party in a very powerful position.
Draghi’s decision to step down came during a period of political crisis and instability which have shaken the balance of power in the continent due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Mario Draghi is the second political leader to resign after Boris Johnson since the Russian invasion which had plunged most economies in Europe backward, which is also a precursor to Draghi’s resignation presently.
Mattarella’s office said in an official statement that, they had taken note of Draghi’s resignation but indulge him to act as a caretaker, which meant that possibility of dissolving the parliament is on the rise, to call for an election in early October.
The President plans to meet the speakers of both houses of parliament on Thursday afternoon, a local source reported.
Mario Draghi was dubbed Super Mario for his handling of the eurozone crisis as head of the European Central Bank, but the unending political crisis in the country which had affected the economy forced Draghi to step down from his office.
