The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced the death of Suhail Hussein Husseini, a top commander in Hezbollah, following a significant airstrike in Beirut.
The strike occurred in a residential area of Beirut, specifically targeting a site believed to be associated with Hezbollah’s command structure. Reports indicate that the airstrike took place in the Dahieh neighborhood, a known stronghold for the militant group.
In addition to Husseini, the airstrike reportedly resulted in at least 31 fatalities, including civilians, and left dozens more injured. The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed that among the deceased were three children and seven women, raising serious humanitarian concerns amid the ongoing hostilities.
The IDF stated that Husseini was responsible for overseeing logistics, budgeting, and management within Hezbollah’s various units. They described him as playing a “crucial role” in facilitating weapon transfers from Iran to Hezbollah and distributing advanced weaponry among its fighters. Additionally, Husseini was identified as a member of Hezbollah’s Jihad council, which is part of its senior military leadership.
The IDF emphasized that Husseini was involved in planning operations against Israel from both Lebanon and Syria, including coordinating attacks aimed at Israeli civilians.
Hezbollah confirmed the death of Husseini and condemned the airstrike as an act of aggression, vowing to retaliate decisively against the Israeli forces for their actions, further heightening fears of an all-out war.
In their statement, Hezbollah accused Israel of using civilian areas as cover for military operations and reiterated their commitment to resisting Israeli incursions.
In recent weeks, hostilities have intensified with multiple exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants with Israeli airstrikes targeting various locations within Lebanon, purportedly aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure.
The United Nations and various international observers have expressed alarm over the rising civilian casualties and the potential for further escalation. Senior UN officials have warned that the current situation could lead to a regional conflict that surpasses previous confrontations.
The ongoing violence has resulted in significant humanitarian challenges for Lebanon. Over 100,000 people have been displaced due to the conflict, with many seeking refuge in safer areas away from combat zones.
Humanitarian organizations are calling for urgent assistance to address the needs of those affected by the violence.
