Germany hosted police officers from various European countries on Thursday to enhance security measures for the Euro 2024 soccer tournament. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser assured vigilance on the eve of the tournament’s opening match.
Terrorist groups such as ISIS have already issued calls for attacks during the month-long tournament, which begins with the host country’s Group A opener against Scotland on Friday.
Germany anticipates 2.7 million attendees at stadiums nationwide and around 12 million at outdoor fan zones, including a large area set up in front of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate for public viewing.
“During the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the fan zones were widely enjoyed. However, it’s unclear whether the public mood at this event can overcome current tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East, alongside a rise in support for the far right across Europe.”
Germany’s security authorities are collaborating with international partners to identify potential threats during the tournament, with 22,000 police officers on duty each day and strengthened border controls in place.
Euro 2024, set to be hosted by Germany, marks a significant milestone in European football. This prestigious tournament will bring together top national teams competing in state-of-the-art stadiums amidst enthusiastic crowds.
