World football’s governing body, FIFA, has delayed a decision regarding the Palestinian Football Association’s (PFA) request to suspend Israel from the federation. Instead, FIFA announced it will investigate claims of discrimination made by the PFA against Israeli football authorities.
During a council meeting in Zurich on Thursday, FIFA confirmed that its disciplinary committee will examine allegations raised by the PFA, which include accusations of discrimination against Arab players and the participation of clubs from Israeli settlements in competitions sanctioned by the Israel Football Association (IFA).
The PFA’s initial proposal for suspension was submitted in May, following significant violence and unrest in Gaza, which they argue has severely impacted Palestinian football, including the deaths of players and destruction of infrastructure.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the need for peace in the region and stated that the governing body is committed to addressing these sensitive issues with due diligence.
The investigations will also assess whether Israeli teams based in occupied territories are participating in competitions, which has raised concerns about compliance with international law.
