Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has reaffirmed China’s commitment to playing a constructive role in alleviating tensions in the Middle East during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday, with the Chinese official emphasizing that China will continue to act as a responsible major country in promoting dialogue and cooperation to cool down ongoing conflicts in the region.
Wang and Araghchi highlighted the importance of maintaining strong China-Iran relations, expressing mutual support for continued exchanges and practical cooperation.
Araghchi conveyed Iran’s deep concerns regarding the potential escalation of regional conflicts and emphasized Tehran’s desire to avoid further hostilities.
Wang noted that the negative impacts of the ongoing Gaza crisis are spilling over into broader regional tensions, calling for all parties to engage in dialogue and consultation. He reiterated China’s opposition to actions that exacerbate tensions or lead to military confrontations.
The Chinese official expressed support for Iran’s diplomatic initiatives aimed at fostering understanding with other regional players. He praised the historic reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, indicating China’s willingness to facilitate further dialogue through the China-Iran-Saudi Arabia Trilateral Joint Committee.
The committee aims to strengthen cooperation among the three nations and promote stability in the Middle East.
China’s involvement in Middle Eastern diplomacy has showcased its growing influence in international affairs, particularly as it seeks to position itself as a mediator in regional conflicts as they consistently advocated for resolving disputes through peaceful means rather than military action.
Wang reaffirmed China’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to statehood and self-determination, emphasizing that any resolution regarding Palestine must reflect their will.
