Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has called on military authorities to accelerate counter-insurgency operations to bring an end to the conflict in the Lake Chad Basin Region.
Buratai made these remarks during the 1st International Conference organized by the Department of History and Strategic Studies at the University of Maiduguri yesterday.
He praised the military for their dedication and hard work in fighting against outlawed groups, emphasizing the need to avoid prolonging the conflict like what happened in Colombia and Sri Lanka.
He emphasized the importance of military operations, which include using military intelligence, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and working closely with local authorities to tackle security issues in the region.
During his tenure, the former army chief stated that troops managed to recapture nine local government areas in Borno within a span of five months.
