The Houthi rebels in Yemen have abducted no less than nine workers of the UN agency in a general crackdown against international organizations.
The circumstances that led to the detentions of the UN employees remain unclear as reported by authorities on Friday.
There has been a general crackdown against Houthi following their recent activities in the Red Sea targeting foreign ships on the sea over the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The UN agency is yet to release an official statement regarding the abduction, but regional officials under anonymity disclosed the information that the detainees were staffers of the UN agency.
The staffers abducted include employees from the UN Hunan Rights Agency, the UN Development Program, the World Food Program, and a staff from the special envoy.
Another human rights organization, the Mayyun Organization for Human Rights has condemned the action of Houthi in its strongest terms, describing it as a violation of the privileges and immunities of United Nations employees granted to them under International law.
