Microsoft is poised to discuss a potential investment in Bitcoin at its upcoming annual meeting in December. This proposal, initiated by the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research as part of Project 2025, argues that Bitcoin could serve as a valuable hedge against inflation.
The proposal to explore Bitcoin as a treasury asset will be presented to shareholders, including major institutional investors like Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street. However, Microsoft’s Board of Directors has expressed strong opposition to the initiative, labeling the vote “unnecessary.” They emphasized that cryptocurrency investments have been previously evaluated and continue to be monitored, stating that Microsoft’s treasury management requires “stable and predictable investments” to ensure operational funding and liquidity.
Microsoft has a history of cautious engagement with cryptocurrency. The board’s stance reflects ongoing concerns about the volatility and speculative nature of digital assets.
In light of the proposal, Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy and a prominent advocate for Bitcoin, has encouraged Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to consult with him regarding the potential benefits of investing in Bitcoin.
Saylor stated, “If you want to make the next trillion dollars for [Microsoft] shareholders, call me.” His company currently holds the largest corporate reserves of Bitcoin, totaling over 252,000 BTC.
The shareholder vote on the proposal is set for December 10. This decision will be crucial not only for Microsoft but also for the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. A positive outcome could reinforce Bitcoin’s appeal as a legitimate asset for traditional corporations and financial entities.
If shareholders vote in favor of exploring Bitcoin investments, it could signal a significant shift in corporate attitudes toward cryptocurrencies. Conversely, a rejection would indicate Microsoft’s reluctance to follow in the footsteps of other tech companies like MicroStrategy and Tesla, both of which have made substantial investments in Bitcoin.
