After 40 years in prison, the longest-serving Palestinian prisoner, Karim Younis, has been released.
Karim was arrested and charged in Israeli courts with the killing of an Israeli soldier in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights three years prior, in 1983.
Large crowds of relatives and friends greeted him after his release on Thursday in the village of Ara.
In a TV interview, Karim said, “I would have liked to seize my freedom with my other brothers in prison.” I was freed, but I left behind prisoners.” “I hope we can soon celebrate the freedom of all the prisoners,” he added.
Karim went to his mother’s grave, where she died eight months ago, and images of him crying at the grave were shared by local and international media.
4,700 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, including 150 children, and 835 people are held without trial or charges.
