The Syrian Arab Republic has decided to cut off diplomatic ties with Ukraine regarding the principle of reciprocity, said a Syrian foreign ministry statement.
A report from Aljazeera says that Syria, a good friend of Moscow, has announced that, their country has officially severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine in response to a similar move by Kyiv. The Syrian foreign ministry says its decision to break with Kyiv was by the “principle of reciprocity.”
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his country’s intention of cutting ties with Syria late last month saying that “there will no longer be relations between Ukraine and Syria” after Syria recognized the independence of the Luhansk and Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
A report from Syria stated that long hostile actions from Ukraine towards Syria have been on the rise, with the famous one being Ukraine’s refusal to revalidate the residence of Syrian diplomatic staff in the capital, making it hard to carry out their official duties.
Syria had been a close ally to Russia, with the latter being of significant importance to the former after Russian President Vladimir Putin helped in the country’s civil war to help tip the balance of power in favor of President Al-Assad.
The help rendered by Russia to the Syrians has made them be more of pro-Moscow, and collectively aid and help themselves when the need arises.
The decision to cut ties with Ukraine on Wednesday comes after Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad meets with Iranian officials in Tehran, following the visit of President Putin to the country for a summit with Turkey and Iran.
