UN Chief Antonio Guterres expressed concern and said he was shocked by an attack from the Russians during his solidarity visit to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
In a video coverage by Al-Jazeera with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres said that there was a report of two missiles attack on the City, and he spelled out his concern for the city and pleaded with the Russians to leave the City out of the attack, insisting on the historical importance of Kyiv to both warring countries.
When asked about his visit to Russia before Ukraine, Guterres insisted that, his major reasons for visiting Moscow at first was for humanitarian purposes, and that he went there to discuss the release of people trapped in the nuclear plant of Mauripol with Russia’s President.
He also replied to a question asked by President Zelenskyy on why Russia hasn’t been suspended from the UN Security Council, according to the UN Chief, the removal of Russia from the Council lies on a vote by the United Nation with a two-third majority voting in favor, and also a special vote by the other members of the Council.
Attending to the role of the United Nation in peaceful negotiation between the two countries, he said, the United Nations has not been involved in the political negotiation of both parties, but they are following every negotiation with keen interest, and they would be willing to help in finding a lasting solution anytime they are invited.
With his visit to Kyiv, the UN Chief will be hoping to convince Ukraine’s President in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict between Russia and his country, as the conflict had continued to have a negative impact on global politics and the economy.
