In a poignant tribute to one of India’s most revered industrialists, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) working president Praful Patel paid their last respects to Ratan Tata at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai.
Tata, who passed away at the age of 86, was celebrated not only for his leadership of the Tata Group but also for his extensive contributions to philanthropy and social causes.
Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons, died on October 9, 2024, after a prolonged illness. His passing has elicited an outpouring of grief from across the nation, with tributes highlighting his visionary leadership and commitment to societal betterment.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Tata would be accorded a state funeral, emphasizing his status as a “living legend” who embodied the values of morality and entrepreneurship.
The Maharashtra government declared a day of mourning on Thursday, with flags flown at half-mast on government buildings. There will be no entertainment events held on this day as a mark of respect.
Tata’s mortal remains were displayed at the NCPA from 10 AM to 4 PM allowing thousands of admirers and dignitaries to pay their last respects. His final rites are scheduled to take place later in the day in Worli, Mumbai.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed profound sorrow over Tata’s death, stating, “Apart from his invaluable contribution as an industrialist, he leaves behind a legacy of benevolence and compassion.” He highlighted Tata’s immense love for India and his philanthropic endeavors that have positively impacted countless lives.
Praful Patel echoed similar sentiments, noting that Tata’s influence extended beyond business into various sectors such as education, healthcare, and rural development. Patel remarked on Tata’s ability to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs through his commitment to ethical business practices.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a “visionary business leader” whose contributions transcended corporate boundaries. Modi praised Tata for championing causes like education and healthcare while maintaining humility and kindness.
President Droupadi Murmu acknowledged Tata as an icon who blended corporate success with nation-building efforts. She noted his significant philanthropic contributions through the Tata Trusts.
Other leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, also paid tribute to Tata’s remarkable legacy, emphasizing his role as a humanitarian and a titan of Indian industry.
