Sue Gray has officially resigned from her position as chief of staff to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and will assume a new role as the Prime Minister’s envoy for regions and nations, as confirmed by Number 10 on October 6, 2024.
This transition comes amid increasing pressure and scrutiny surrounding her leadership within the Labour Party.
Gray’s resignation follows mounting tensions within the party and allegations of her being overly controlling regarding information access for the Prime Minister. Reports suggest that her position had become “unsustainable,” leading to frustrations among special advisers and party staff.
In her resignation statement, Gray noted that “intense commentary around my position risked becoming a distraction to the government’s vital work of change.” She emphasized her commitment to public service and expressed a desire to focus on supporting the government’s objectives in her new role.
In her new capacity, Gray will work to strengthen relations with devolved governments and support initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation across the UK. She expressed enthusiasm about leveraging her experience to assist the Prime Minister and Cabinet in delivering their objectives.
Gray highlighted that she looks forward to continuing her partnership with key figures in government, including the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Cabinet members, and mayors involved in English devolution.
In a written statement, Starmer thanked Gray for her contributions both in opposition and government. He acknowledged her vital role in preparing the Labour Party for government and initiating its program for change.
Morgan McSweeney, formerly Starmer’s head of political strategy, will succeed Gray as chief of staff. This change aims to stabilize leadership within No 10 amid ongoing challenges faced by the government.
Gray’s departure comes at a time when the Labour Party is navigating various internal challenges, including public perception issues stemming from recent controversies. The transition is seen as an opportunity for the party to refocus its efforts and strengthen its governance structure.
