The first China-Latin America and Caribbean States Roundtable on Human Rights will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on September 10. The event is being organized by the China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS) in collaboration with Renmin University of China and Brazil’s Fluminense Federal University.
Over 120 senior officials, experts, and scholars in the field of human rights from China, Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as representatives from relevant social organizations, think tanks, and media outlets, will participate in the roundtable discussions.
The roundtable aims to promote dialogue and exchange on human rights issues between China and Latin American nations.
It comes at a time when China’s engagement with the region has been steadily increasing, with China becoming the main trading partner for several Latin American countries.
China views human rights not only in legal terms but also prioritizes socioeconomic rights and the right to development. It insists that laws to protect human rights be enforced according to each country’s national conditions.
The roundtable provides an opportunity for China and Latin American nations to discuss their differing approaches to human rights and explore areas of common ground.
By acting separately on sensitive matters, the two sides have been able to strengthen their partnership and seek common development.
The event is expected to contribute to a better understanding of China’s human rights policy among Latin American countries and promote further cooperation between the two regions in this field.
