The UK Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain, potentially bringing flooding and power outages to millions over the weekend. The warning will be in effect from 9 PM on Saturday, September 7, until 6 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
This alert spans from southern England to Manchester, with heavy, thundery rain expected. Some regions may see as much as 100mm of rainfall, though amounts could vary, with some areas receiving less than 10mm and others seeing 40-60mm or higher. The Met Office warned that persistent rain is likely in western areas, while slow-moving thunderstorms may develop further east.
Recent rainfall has increased the risk of flooding and disruption in these regions. Two active flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency in southwest England, particularly along the Lower Avon River. Although the overall risk of flooding in southern and central England is currently low, local authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Dan Harris, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, explained that the forecast remains complex due to multiple heavy rain corridors and slow-moving low pressure. “We are keeping warnings under review and may issue further alerts as confidence increases over the weekend,” he said.
Residents are advised to prepare for possible travel disruptions and flooding by checking forecasts, reviewing flood plans, and preparing emergency kits in case of power cuts or severe weather.
