The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed that key opposition leaders in Nigeria are planning to form a coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election. This information was shared by PDP spokesman Ibrahim Abdullahi during an interview with Channels Television on September 2.
Abdullahi mentioned that three prominent figures from the last presidential election—Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)—are considering setting aside personal differences to unite against the APC and President Bola Tinubu.
He pointed out that if past leadership in the PDP had managed internal conflicts better, leaders like Kwankwaso, Obi, and former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike might still be with the party, potentially leading to a victory over Tinubu in the previous election. Abdullahi emphasized that ongoing discussions among these opposition leaders could lead to a unified front in 2027.
Abdullahi noted, “Just one of these names could have bridged the gap that cost us the last election. If they had stayed with us, we might have won and spared Nigerians the current hardships.”
The PDP is currently exploring ways to bring these leaders together under a common goal to “salvage Nigerians from despair and insecurity.” The party remains optimistic about a potential merger that could lead to a stronger challenge against the ruling party in the next election.
Meanwhile, Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has distanced himself from any potential alliance with Atiku, Obi, or Kwankwaso. Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to a revolutionary change in Nigeria, emphasizing that his ideology differs significantly from that of the APC or PDP. He stated that his focus remains on advocating for a system that prioritizes the welfare of Nigerians, driven by a socialist democratic vision.
