The parents of a postgraduate medical student from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital have raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s death. Speaking at a media briefing on Saturday, they questioned whether their daughter’s death was the result of a single individual or involved someone from within the institution, especially after viewing her body.
The grieving family criticized the medical department for negligence and alleged harassment by the police on August 9, the day their daughter’s body was discovered. The student’s father expressed doubt about the location of her death, stating, “I doubt if my daughter was killed in the seminar room.” He referenced the last conversation she had with her mother, in which she mentioned plans to have dinner in the seminar hall at 11:15 PM. The father also noted that his daughter kept a daily diary, which was seized during the investigation.
Recalling the investigation, he said, “I was present when the seizure list was being prepared. The police took out some reports and medicines from my daughter’s bag, trying to divert the case.” He clarified that the medications found were related to an unknown bite mark, not a chronic illness as suggested by the authorities.
The student’s mother shared her frustration at being initially denied access to her daughter’s body. “I was not allowed to see my daughter’s face. What I have seen, it is not possible for one person to do such an act,” she said. She described the timeline of events, noting that they received a call from the hospital at 10:53 AM on August 9, arrived by 12:30 PM, but were only allowed to see their daughter’s body at 3 PM, during which time they were kept waiting in the chest medicine department.
The family accused the police of trying to mislead the investigation by suggesting their daughter was unwell. “We faced so much harassment until the body was brought. They kept us under pressure,” the mother added, mentioning an incident where the police allegedly attempted to damage her daughter’s car.
The mother also claimed to have informed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the potential involvement of an insider in the case. She expressed doubts about the arrested suspect, Sanjay Roy, questioning how he could have known that her daughter was alone without insider knowledge. According to the mother, the chief minister acknowledged her concerns and indicated that the main accused had been arrested.
The father further criticized the medical department, stating that no one from his daughter’s department had contacted them since her death. “Someone from inside was definitely involved,” he asserted, echoing his wife’s sentiments about the need for accountability.
As the case unfolds, the parents continue to seek answers and justice, questioning the integrity of the investigation and the circumstances leading to their daughter’s untimely death. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater accountability within the medical institution and law enforcement.
