France captain Kylian Mbappe strongly criticized the far-right National Rally party for its substantial gains in the first round of French parliamentary elections last weekend, labeling the results as catastrophic.
He passionately urged French voters to mobilize against the party, stressing the urgency of the situation. Alongside other French players at the European Championship, Mbappe has been vocal in opposing the potential scenario of Marine Le Pen’s RN party taking control of France’s 577-seat national parliament.
Mbappe urged France’s young voters to reject extremism and, on the eve of his team’s quarter-final against Portugal, was again asked for a message ahead of the return to the polls on Sunday for the parliamentary election run-off.
“More than ever, we have to go and vote. It is really urgent; we cannot leave our country in the hands of these people,” Mbappe emphasized during a press conference.
RN made historic gains in the first round but is projected to fall short of an absolute majority in Sunday’s run-off, according to an opinion poll released on Thursday.
