The White House on Tuesday expressed deep concern as four U.S. nationals working as teachers in China were stabbed by a 55-year-old suspect.
The White House said they’re monitoring the situation in China as they’re in close contact with their officials in Beijing.
In a press statement, the White House said, “We are deeply concerned by the stabbing of US citizens in Jilin City, China. Our team has been in touch with these Americans and our PRC counterparts to ensure that the victim’s needs are met, and appropriate law enforcement steps are being taken.”
The suspect has been arrested by the Chinese police, with the victims are currently under medical treatment, as the Chinese government said the victims are not under life threat.
The Chinese foreign ministry in assessing the situation described it as a random incident and won’t affect the diplomatic relationship between Beijing and Washington.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson said the investigation is currently ongoing, affirming Beijing as one of the safest countries in the world.
