Following the official recognition of the State of Palestine, Spain has followed the footsteps of South Africa by filing a genocidal case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
This development was confirmed by the Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares Bueno on Thursday.
Jose in a press briefing said the country (Spain) sees the petition against Israel as necessary following the continuation of the military onslaught in Gaza.
The Spanish minister also raises concern about escalation of the conflict beyond Gaza fearing future escalation of the war across the Middle East as tensions between Israel and Lebanon increase.
“Spain took this decision to not only let peace return to Gaza and the Middle East but also due to its commitment to international law.
We seek to support the court in the application of precautionary measures, especially in the finalization of military operations in Rafah so that peace returns, in the obstacles to the entry of humanitarian aid that must end, and in the destruction of civilian infrastructure that must cease”, he said.
Jose added that the intention of Spain in joining the case remains the same which is acquiring peace in the world as done for Ukraine during its crisis with Russia.
