The Federal High Court in Kano postponed the hearing on Aminu Babba Danagundi’s case contesting the legality of the Kano Emirate (Repeal) Law 2024, reinstating Muhammadu Sanusi II. The postponement was caused by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) nationwide strike.
The hearing was planned for Monday, June 3 by Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman. The hearing was unable to proceed as the court remained shut, with local sources noting that the court gates were locked.
A court staff member, who chose to remain anonymous, verified that there would be no court sessions, whether virtual (via Zoom) or physical, due to the ongoing strike.
Earlier, the court had issued a temporary injunction preventing the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) from carrying out, enforcing, or executing the new law until the hearing and resolution of the fundamental rights application brought before it.
Furthermore, the court directed all involved parties to uphold the existing state of affairs and present arguments regarding jurisdictional matters concerning chieftaincy affairs.
Recall, the Kano State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker RT. Hon. Jibrin Falgore on Thursday announced the dethronement of the five Emirs and the abolishment of the five Emirates during a special session.
