Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated on Monday that the group targeted a military site in Israel’s port city of Eilat with a new ballistic missile.
The Houthi militia, aligned with Iran and controlling Yemen’s most populous regions, has been attacking ships off its coast for months in solidarity with Palestinians engaged in conflict with Israel in Gaza.
In a televised address, Saree announced that the group had targeted the military site with a ballistic missile named ‘Palestine,’ which is being revealed for the first time today. The operation, he stated, successfully achieved its objective.
The Houthi movement has been involved in a protracted conflict in Yemen, primarily against the internationally recognized government supported by a Saudi-led coalition. The group has launched numerous missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, including oil facilities and civilian areas, claiming to retaliate against Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen.
The U.S. has supported the Saudi-led coalition with intelligence, logistics, and arms sales, viewing the conflict as a proxy battle against Iranian influence in the region, as Iran is accused of providing support to the Houthis.
The U.S. has also imposed sanctions on Houthi leaders and entities associated with the group.
