U.S. Vice President Harris will travel to Switzerland for the Peace Summit organized by Ukraine after President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to President Biden to attend the summit.
Harris will participate in the summit on June 15 in Lucerne, where she is expected to emphasize Biden’s Administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s efforts to secure a just and lasting peace, based on Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles of the UN Charter.
The United States Vice President will be accompanied by national security adviser Jake Sullivan to represent the United States. During her visit, Harris will also reaffirm U.S. support for the people of Ukraine as they fight against Russian aggression on their homeland.
Zelensky recently appealed for Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend, highlighting the need for their leadership in advancing peace. However, Biden will be in Los Angeles on June 15 for a high-dollar fundraiser with former President Obama, Hollywood actors George Clooney, and Julia Roberts.
National security communications official John Kirby defended Biden’s decision not to attend the summit himself, emphasizing Biden’s consistent support for Ukraine. Kirby noted, “We’re sending the vice president and the national security adviser to this peace summit, which is high-level, serious representation by the United States.”
