A military veteran found guilty of injuring a police officer during the January 6 Capitol riot has been sentenced to five years in prison.
The judgment was passed down on Friday after the veteran failed to address the court.
The presiding judge District Judge Beryl Howell chastised John George Todd III for his role in the political riot, adding that his conduct wasn’t a patriotism to the United States.
He described Todd’s act as unbefitting for a marine officer, saying “This is not a patriot. This is not conduct becoming of a Marine.”
Todd was earlier recommended for over 12 years in prison after engaging actively in the riot but was later reduced to the actual sentence.
The prosecutors said, “As the country approaches another contentious election year, one that will see a rematch of the 2020 Presidential election that was at issue for the rioters on January 6, every January 6 sentencing sends a message about the importance of democratic values and the rule of law.”
Todd despite getting indicted in the riot failed to show remorse for his actions despite being in jail since February after he was convicted on six counts by a jury.
