Left-wing candidate Claudia Sheinbaum is poised to become Mexico’s first female president after the country embarked on a historic election over the weekend.
Mexico which in its history has had two female presidential aspirants will have to settle for Jewish Claudia Sheinbaum of the ruling Morena party.
In the early counting of the votes, Sheinbaum maintains a significant lead against her contestant Xochitl Galvez of the opposition alliance, setting her on the track for a presidential victory.
Claudia Sheinbaum who before her presidential ambition was the mayor of Mexico City with support for the party increased significantly over the years.
Many factors have been analyzed to be contributory factors to her victory but the most significant one is the support given to her by the current president of Mexico Andres Lopez Obrador who remains a force and significant in the political terrain of the country.
Despite forming opposition alliances, Xochitl Galvez was unable to defeat the ruling Morena party following a controversy over her riding bicycle in Mexico City that overshadowed her chance.
