Iraq executed eight individuals convicted of “terrorism,” as confirmed by a security source and a health official on Friday. This marks the third instance of such executions in just over a month in the country.
Iraqi courts have handed down hundreds of death and life sentences in recent years to individuals convicted of “terrorism” in trials criticized by rights groups for their hurried nature.
According to Iraqi law, acts of terrorism and murder are subject to the death penalty, with execution orders requiring presidential approval.
A security official confirmed that eight Iraqis, convicted of terrorism and linked to the Islamic State group, were hanged at Al-Hut prison in Nasiriyah. The execution was supervised by a team from the Ministry of Justice.
According to a medical source, the health department received the bodies of eight individuals who were executed. Al-Hut prison in Nasiriyah, known as “the whale” in Arabic, is infamous, with many Iraqis believing that inmates rarely leave alive.
