Germany on Friday has heed to the plea of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who relentlessly called for allies to intervene in Ukraine, as Berlin gives full permission to Kyiv to strike targets in Russia.
Germany said it gave Ukraine the right to use the German-supplied weapons against Russian attacks from positions over their joint border.
This decision is expected to change the tide of war in Ukraine with Russia promising to retaliate should foreign weapons be used against them.
In a statement released by Germany’s government on Friday, it said Ukraine has the leverage under international law to defend itself against Russia, and any weapons delivered to them are legally recognized to strike targets.
The German government believed the Russian forces were gaining momentum in the war against Ukraine due to their advanced equipment while Kyiv suffered from a shortage of resources and military troops.
While Russia continues to shell Ukraine and press further in Kharkiv, the Western allies said, Ukraine must be armed to curtail the attack of Moscow forces south of Kharkiv.
The U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday gave Ukraine the needed action to strike Russia with US military equipment emphasizing a change in the dimension of the crisis.
Kremlin is yet to release an official statement on the decision of the Western allies but Russia Deputy Head of Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has issued a stern warning regarding the action of the allies, saying it could lead to nuclear confrontation with catastrophic consequences.
