The Australian Government officially designated Yemen’s Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, as a terrorist organization on Friday.
The country’s Attorney General, Mark Dreyfus, emphasized that the decision to designate the Islamist organization as a terror group came after careful consideration of proposals from Australia’s security agencies.
The Australian security agencies’ proposals underscored the Houthis’ involvement in “directly or indirectly preparing, planning, assisting in, or fostering terrorist attacks.”
The statement further highlighted that the Houthis’ “violent attacks” in the Gulf of Aden region have led to the deaths of civilians.
The Houthis’ operations in the Gulf of Aden have raised significant concerns in the region and the international community. Reports indicate that the Houthis have been conducting military activities in this strategic waterway, posing a threat to maritime security and navigation.
The disruption caused by the Houthis’ activities in the Gulf of Aden has prompted international condemnation and calls for measures to ensure the safety and security of maritime traffic in the region.
