A moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck near Kucha in Xinjiang, China, late Thursday evening. The quake occurred at 10:34 PM local time, with its epicentre located 88 kilometres (55 miles) from Kucha.
According to reports, the earthquake had a very shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles). Despite its proximity to Kucha, a town with a population of 68,000, there have been no reports of the quake being felt by residents, suggesting that any shaking experienced was likely very weak.
Kucha, situated to the east of the epicentre, is the nearest larger town where the tremor might have been perceptible. However, the lack of reported impact indicates minimal disruption in the area.
As of now, there are no reports of damage or injuries resulting from the earthquake. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, but the shallow depth and moderate magnitude suggest that significant effects are unlikely.
