Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is currently “between life and death” following a recent assassination attempt. Orbán’s statement contradicts earlier reports that described Fico’s condition as stable, suggesting a more dire situation and a potentially prolonged recovery.
The assassination attempt on Fico, which occurred two days ago, marks the most significant attack on a European political figure in over two decades. This incident has garnered widespread international condemnation and has sparked concerns about the safety of political leaders in the region.
Orbán warned that even if Fico recovers, he is unlikely to be able to resume his duties for several months. This comes at a critical juncture, with European Parliament elections scheduled for early next month. The elections are seen as pivotal, not only for determining the composition of the European Parliament but also for influencing broader geopolitical issues, including the course of war and peace in Europe.
“We are facing an election that will decide not just about members of the European Parliament but, along with the US election, can determine the course of war and peace in Europe,” Orbán stated. “In that situation, we would have badly needed Robert Fico and a pro-peace Slovakia.”
Orbán highlighted the significant role Fico plays in promoting peace in Slovakia and, by extension, in Europe. Fico’s absence during such a critical period could have far-reaching implications for the European political and security landscape, Orbán admitted.
