Namtira Bwala, a student at Lead British International School in Abuja, has taken legal action against the school management following an incident of bullying by her peers.
Represented by Marvin Omorogbe, Founding Partner of Deji Adeyanju and Partners, Bwala alleges that the school failed to uphold its responsibility of providing a safe and nurturing learning environment. She seeks a public apology to be published in two national dailies and N500 million in general damages.
The viral video that surfaced online showed Namtira being physically bullied and assaulted by her classmate, Maryam Hassan. In the footage, Namtira was slapped and tormented while being asked, “Who broke my heart?”¹ The incident has sparked outrage and drawn attention to the need for better anti-bullying measures within educational institutions.
According to the statement, the civil suit was instituted against Lead British International School, Gwarimpa, Abuja, following the viral video released on the internet a few weeks ago where their client was seen being bullied by her fellow students.
The victim’s family described it as a result of the school’s failure in its obligation to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for their client.
