In a recent ruling, a Nigerian court sentenced three men to hang for theft in the southwestern state of Ekiti. Omotayo Deji, Chidiebere Ifeanyi and Bolaji Usman, among others, were charged with conspiracy and armed robbery.
According to the indictment, the three were found in May 2019 at Ava Elinfang, Federal Polytechnic Road, Ad Ekiti, where they found phones, laptops, sandals, chargers, power banks, etc. worth Nera 186,000.
During the trial, prosecutor Kunle Sina Adeyemo presented witnesses and evidence in support of the charges. Judge Omotojo found the defendants guilty of armed robbery and sentenced them to death by hanging.
The ruling demonstrates that the Nigerian government will not tolerate criminal activity, especially violent crimes such as armed robbery, and the severity of the penalties is also intended to act as a deterrent to those seeking to participate in such criminal activity.
Citizens must work with law enforcement to prevent crime and bring criminals to justice.
